WHO WE ARE

Heartsounds Uganda is a leading organization in the development of Mental Health Peer Support in Uganda. It was started in 2008 as a Community Based Organization and partnered with Butabika East London Link to pilot the Peer Support Workers program in Uganda. We are known as “Experts by Experience” because most of our Peer Support Workers have a lived experience.
Heartsounds Uganda has brances in Kampala, Gulu, and Mbarara.
Heartsounds Gulu has been working in partnership with Sheffield Health International Partnership to implement the suicide awareness and prevention in Gulu and Omoro distrticts. Omoro had the highest suicide rates in Uganda. It was timely intervention for the training of health center workers. Heartsounds Uganda members participated actively in contributed towards the Mental Health Bill which was signed into an Act of Parliament in December, 2018 by President Yoweri Museveni. We have interacted with Mental Health Professionals, Care takers, Community members, and service users from other organizations, Law enforcement officers and policy members to share information.
Heartsounds Uganda runs a Library, an internet café where members are trained computer skills, read and borrow books to improve their knowledge. It is also a space where members interact with others in order to keep off loneliness and boredom. Both people with psychosocial disabilities and others are welcome to use the facilities.
